Shaal: In its monthly report for September 2023, human rights organization Paank (BNM’s Human Rights Department) provided an overview of the human rights situation in Balochistan. The report highlighted several significant issues that occurred during the month. One of the major concerns was the continued practice of forced disappearances by the Pakistan Army. Throughout September, 75 individuals were taken into illegal and extrajudicial custody by the Pakistani forces, further violating human rights in the region.

Another notable development in September was the release of individuals from military torture cells. Sixteen individuals who had been victims of forced disappearances were released and reunited with their families.

However, the situation remained grim as the Pakistani military resorted to staging fake encounters during the month. They falsely claimed that 10 Baloch individuals were killed in these encounters. It was revealed that seven of the deceased were already victims of forced disappearances by the military. This deceitful practice further violates human rights and undermines trust and justice in the region.

The district of Dera Bugti experienced severe atrocities during military aggression in September. This aggression caused harm to the livelihoods of residents and their livestock and led to the forced disappearance of 32 individuals from various social strata. The targeted areas witnessed immense suffering.

Dr. Naseem Baloch, the Chairman of the Baloch National Movement, took a stand against these human rights violations at the 54th session of the United Nations. He highlighted the atrocities committed by the Pakistani military in Balochistan and called for immediate attention to this pressing issue. His advocacy serves as a plea for international intervention to address the ongoing human rights abuses in the region.

Tragically, a suicide bombing occurred on September 29 at a religious gathering in Mastung, Balochistan. This incident resulted in numerous casualties and indicates the rise of religious extremism in Baloch society. The report suggests that this extremism is being fueled, in part, by the Pakistani state. The involvement of Pakistan in creating and sustaining extremist groups like ISIS in various parts of Balochistan is a serious concern that needs to be addressed promptly.

In summary, the human rights situation in Balochistan during September 2023 was marred by forced disappearances, torture, fake encounters, military aggressions, and rising religious extremism. Paank’s monthly report sheds light on these pressing issues and emphasizes the need for immediate international attention and action to address the human rights abuses occurring in Balochistan.
