CPEC Brings Repression and Exploitation for Balochistan, Not Development, Says Anhelina at BNM Conference

The exploitation and suppression of the Baloch people's fight for freedom cannot be ignored.

Geneva, — During the 5th Balochistan International Conference organized by the Baloch National Movement (BNM), Anhelina, a representative of Peace for Asia, highlighted the need to address the ongoing human rights crisis in Balochistan.

“Today, we gather to bring attention to the systemic oppression, forced disappearances, and exploitation faced by the people of Balochistan, a region rich in natural resources yet deprived of its basic rights,” Anhelina remarked, drawing attention to the continued exploitation of natural gas in the region.

She pointed out that the Sui gas fields have been exploited for over five decades, with cities like Lahore and Islamabad benefiting from these resources. Meanwhile, the local population in Sui remains without access to the same resource. This, she emphasized, is an example of the economic injustices faced by the Baloch people.

Anhelina further addressed the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), stating that the project has led to repression rather than bringing development. “The militarization of Balochistan under the pretext of securing CPEC has resulted in land grabs, displacement, and an increase in human rights violations, including enforced disappearances and killings,” she added.

She called on the international community to take action, urging independent investigations into the human rights abuses occurring in Balochistan. Anhelina stressed the importance of supporting the Baloch people’s right to self-determination and ensuring their voices are heard.

In concluding her address, she said, “The exploitation and suppression of the Baloch people’s fight for freedom cannot be ignored. It is our collective responsibility to work toward justice, dignity, and self-determination for Balochistan.”

The conference aims to raise awareness about the crisis and advocate for the rights of the Baloch people on an international level.
