On the second anniversary of the enforced disappearance of Baloch national leader Ustad Wahid Kambar Baloch, the spokesperson for the Baloch National Movement (BNM) stated that Ustad Wahid Kambar Baloch has been held in the custody of the Pakistan Army for the past two years. As one of the foremost leaders of the Baloch nation, he should be recognized as a prisoner of war and produced publicly without further delay.
The spokesperson said that Balochistan remains an occupied country under Pakistan’s control, and Ustad Wahid Kambar Baloch is one of the leading figures in the Baloch struggle for national liberation. He has played a pivotal and decisive role in transforming the independence movement into a broad-based popular struggle.
He further stated that on July 19, 2024, Ustad Wahid Kambar Baloch was abducted from the Iranian city of Kerman by personnel of Pakistan’s intelligence agencies. At the time, he was residing there with the support of close relatives while undergoing treatment for a heart condition.
The spokesperson added that, in accordance with international law and universally recognized humanitarian principles, Ustad Wahid Kambar Baloch should be recognized as a prisoner of war. Reports indicate that he is being subjected to severe physical and psychological torture while in detention in an attempt to break his resolve and coerce him into making statements contrary to his political beliefs. Given his advanced age and deteriorating health, there are serious concerns for his well-being and safety.
The spokesperson said that international human rights organizations have so far failed to compel Pakistan to uphold its human rights obligations. Pakistan continues to benefit from various international trade preferences and diplomatic privileges, which are contingent upon adherence to democratic values, the rule of law, and respect for human rights. However, the Pakistani state has consistently failed to meet these obligations.
He called on the international community to hold Pakistan accountable and impose effective sanctions, stressing that the human rights situation in Balochistan continues to deteriorate. Cases of enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, collective punishment, and political repression are all on the rise, underscoring the urgent need for meaningful international action.
